Mattress Buying Guide

How important is your mattress?

  • Your mattress is the most important piece of furniture in your home.
  • You'll spend a third of your life on it.
  • No other piece of furniture contributes so profoundly to your health and well-being.

No item in your home will ever get more hours of use.

Most people replace their mattress every seven to ten years; you'll sleep on this decision for a long time. Most buyers shop backwards for their mattress, comfort is the single most important factor. Support and durability rank close behind. When it comes to comfort, there is no right and wrong. Only what's right for you. It's worth the effort to find out what works best for you.

The Serta Perfect Sleeper® has been the best - selling premium mattress on the market for years. There are several reasons why. Unmatched comfort, support and durability -- the building blocks for a good night's sleep -- are benefits the world has come to expect from Serta mattresses.

Are you close to replacing your mattress?
That depends on two things:

1. How Tired Is Your Mattress?

Signs it might be time to replace your sleep set:

  • A valley has developed in the section of the mattress where you sleep.
  • Sagging across the middle third of the mattress or along the sides makes you roll toward your partner.
  • The mattress makes creaking noises.
  • Soft, non-supportive edges are a sign of edge breakdown.
  • You're waking up sore or stiff in the morning.
  • You've developed reoccurring back pain.

2. How Tired Are You?

Signs you're not getting enough sleep or your sleep quality is poor:

  • Always tired in the morning.
  • Have constant difficulty getting out of bed.
  • In need of a nap during the day.
  • Irritable.
  • Unable to concentrate.
  • Not sleeping well. Poor sleeping habits or sleep deprivation is usually the first sign of a low-quality or older mattress.

The three basic levels of every sleep set.

1. Comfort Level

The feeling you get when you first lie down on a mattress comes from the foams and fibers used in the upholstery layers above the innerspring.

In Serta® mattresses, these special fibers and responsive, body-conforming foams are designed to ease pressure points along the body. This reduces tossing and turning, and gives you a better night's sleep.

2. Innerspring Level

The innerspring provides the support characteristics of the mattress, and Serta makes its innersprings from double-tempered steel coils. The "Coil Count" or number of coils in a mattress varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. Of course, it also depends on size of the mattress. (In other words, twin mattresses will have fewer coils, while queens and kings will have more.)

When you compare Serta's coil count and wire gauge with competitive brands, you'll notice several significant differences. Serta's unique innerspring consists of rows of wire coils that run from head to toe along the life of the body. Because the coil rows run head-to-toe, they respond to each sleeper individually and help reduce partner movement.

3. Foundation Level

The foundation is the base of the sleep set and works in unison with the mattress to provide proper support and durability. The foundation is designed to complement the performance of the mattress. Purchasing just the mattress or foundation alone reduces the overall durability of the set.

Serta's Perfect Sleeper has a new StabL-Base Triple Beam Foundation that provides consistent support across the bottom of the mattress and lasting durability to the entire sleep set. Its unique V-shaped construction isolates the impact of one sleep partner's movements on the other. Serta's patented Triple Beam design delivers durability and strength from the ground up, and is more than twice as strong as traditional wood frames.
