Finding the Right Mattress to Match

Find the Right Mattress to Match | New Bed After Married

Every new journey comes with the excitement of change, joy of discovery and requisite compromise. Tying the knot is no different—sharing space in the midst of varying schedules, hobbies and habits requires give and take. But if there’s one thing couples shouldn’t have to compromise on, it’s regularly scheduled top-notch sleep. A sleep commitment will earn you smoother communication, less stress and more laughter as a married pair.

So if it’s your first time buying a new mattress or maybe just your first time buying a new mattress as a couple, try these shopping tips and product recommendations designed to make your sleep space work best for both of you.

Proper Fit

Is your sleep style super cuddly or a little standoffish? If you and your partner both love to sprawl out, arms and legs splayed starfish-style, it’s a good idea to upgrade to a king size mattress. Same goes for those who turn and move throughout the night. If you or your partner are particularly tall, consider a California king, which is four inches longer than a standard king and offers a more comfortable fit for the long-limbed set.

If your sleep style is more compact (maybe you snuggle up or tend to stay stationary throughout the night), a queen size mattress may be right for you.

Whichever size you choose, keep in mind that a twin or full bed is likely not a good match. Did you know sharing a full mattress with your spouse is like fitting into the width of a crib? Read: Not comfy or conducive a good night’s sleep. The best advice for those sharing a sleep space is to stick with a queen size or larger.

Customize vs. Compromise

Product Tips: Most mattresses are available in a split king size, which is actually just two twin XL mattresses paired side by side. A split king allows each of you to select your own comfort level—so your side can be plush while your partner’s side is firm. A split king adjustable base lets you move both sides of the bed up and down independently. Need to elevate your feet but your partner wants to lie flat? No problem. Many adjustable bases will even let you save your favorite positions for easy recall.

Sleep Sanctuary

When done right, a shared sleep space is more like a sleep sanctuary—the ultimate relaxation zone where you can unwind after a warp-speed day. A simple yet powerful way to perfect your sanctuary is with well-chosen linens.

Look for mattress and pillow protection that gives you peace of mind from allergens, spills and dust mites. Sheets should be breathable and strong while offering softness and comfort. And remember: Higher thread count doesn’t necessary mean better quality. Thread count is the total number of threads per square inch, which most experts agree tops out at around 400. Be wary of sheets claiming thread counts in the 1000’s—these products are likely comprised of several lower-quality fibers melded together to create an artificially high count.

Get Pillow Picky

While pillow shopping, you may be tempted to grab the first two models you see and call it a day. But depending on your sleep style and comfort preferences, the pillow your partner chooses may be completely different than the one you prefer. Side sleepers do well with a thicker model while back sleepers should choose a product that cradles the neck and spine without pushing the head too far forward or allowing it to fall too far back. Stomach sleepers should consider a pillow style with very little loft to avoid waking up with neck pain.

Keep It Cool

Regardless of your comfort and support preferences, sleep experts agree on one thing: A cooler sleep space can help you drift off faster and stay asleep longer. Temperature-regulating mattress technology has come a long way in recent years and is available in a range in brands, materials and price points. At the heart of this technology is heat elimination and air circulation. Moisture-wicking covers, gel-infused foams and heat-regulating fibers are just some of the cooling features you can expect to find.

Hybrid How-to

Dead set on memory foam but your spouse is a coil devotee? A hybrid model may be the perfect solution. Combining high quality, adaptive foams with durable, supportive coils, hybrid models offer the best of both worlds: the comfort and conformability of foam plus the dependable and well-loved support of coils. Today’s top hybrid models feature pressure-relieving memory foam or gel-infused memory foam in the top layers and responsive-yet-strong steel coils in the support layer.
